Breadcrumb structured-data check

active
engine

Crumbs in the result tell the searcher where they will land. A broken trail reads as a broken site.

What it checks

Page JSON-LD must declare a BreadcrumbList whose itemListElement entries each carry position, name, and item. Positions must start at 1 and run unbroken.

Pass conditions

  • Complete trail from the section front down to the current page.
  • Every item URL resolves — no retired section fronts hiding mid-trail.
  • Visible on-page crumbs, if any, name the same trail in the same order.

Typical fails

Restructures that rename a section without updating descendants; trails that stop at the parent instead of including the page itself; position gaps after a mid-trail item is deleted.

Fix checklist

  • Generate the trail from the routing tree, never hand-write it per page.
  • Include the current page as the final element — trails that end at the parent under-describe.
  • After any IA move, re-run one audit before calling it done.
